Betty Mira Crandall, 60, died June 25 at Harbor Convalescence Center in Torrance, Calif. after a long battle with cancer. All friends were invited to attend a mass in her honor at Saint Michael's Catholic Church in Palmer. Ms. Crandall was buried at Forest Lawn Mortuary in Long Beach, Calif.
She was born June 3, 1934, in New Jersey. Ms. Crandall was raised in Edison, N.J. and attended Highland Park High School with honors. She married her high school sweetheart. She attended a number of universities including Seton Hall in New Jersey. Ms. Crandall worked as a teacher for Los Angeles School District. Inspired by Alaska's beauty, she moved to Palmer in 1985. She was very active in community affairs and the church. She was a Eucaristic minister and a board member at Saint Michaels Catholic Church. She also initiated the refugee programs. Ms. Crandall was diagnosed with extremely high blood pressure at an early age, but was given the grace to live. She had exceptional talents for writing, voice and piano. Her family said, "She brought compassion to this world. She would never refuse to help anyone." Her inspirational writings about Alaska will soon be published in a book entitled "Alaska Revelations."
Ms. Crandall is survived by her daughters, Dawn Derrickson of Anchorage and Donna Crandall of Long Beach, Calif. and grandchildren, Kristina and Justine Derrickson and Ilona Crandall.
