BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. Cheryl Ann Crain, age 57, 7385 SE Boone Lake Road, passed away at 6:09 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, at St. Johns Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo., following an illness.
Cheryl was born May 20, 1949, at Hartner, Kan. Her parents were Martin and Erma (Redwine) Potter.
She graduated from Baxter Springs High School in 1967.
She acquired a bachelors degree from Kansas State College, Pittsburg, Kan., in 1971. She later acquired a masters degree.
While at college, she was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority. She was also a homecoming queen candidate and a Lambda Chi Alpha Sweetheart.
She was an elementary school teacher. She began her teaching career at Central School in Baxter Springs. She taught several years at Fort Bend School District in Sugarland, Texas, last working in 2002.
She had been named Teacher of the Year at Sugarland along with several other school awards. She was also the District Teacher of the Year in 2002.
She returned to Baxter Springs in the spring of 2004, moving from Houston, Texas.
She was a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority.
She was an active member of First United Methodist Church, Baxter Springs.
Surviving are two daughters, Deborah Rodriguez (husband, Bart), Liberal, Kan., and Donna Frick (husband, Dan), Fort Polk, La.; her parents, Martin and Erma Potter, Baxter Springs; one brother, Marc H. Potter, Riverton, Kan.; four sisters, Susan Whiteneck (husband, Troy), Baytown, Texas, Yvonne Roller (husband, Clayton), Baxter Springs, Michelle Swaney (husband, Greg), Bartlesville, Okla., and Virginia Krebiel (husband, Monte), Wichita, Kan.; two grandchildren, Absalom Rodriguez and Danielle Frick; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and a host of friends.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at Derfelts Baxter Chapel, Baxter Springs.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at the First United Methodist Church, Baxter Springs. Rev. Wayne Handle will officiate.
Contributions may be made to either the American Diabetes Association or the First United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home.
