ABINGDON - Dorothy Darlene Craig Bice, 94, rural Abingdon, died at 3:25 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, at Woodridge Supportive Living Residence of Galesburg, where she had received assisted living the past four months.
She was born Aug. 7, 1917, in Victoria, the daughter of Upton James and Emma Almeda (Johnson) Craig. She married William W. "Bill" Bice on Aug. 25, 1942, in San Diego. He preceded her in death on Oct. 14, 1994.
Surviving are one son, Roger Bice and his companion Diane Shugart of rural Abingdon; two grandchildren, Donavan Bice of St. Augustine and Katrina Smith of Oneida; and three great-grandchildren, Shailee Sampson and Emma Smith, both of Oneida and Chandler Bice of St. Augustine.
She graduated from Victoria High School and lived in the Victoria area for several years. She also graduated from Knox College and the former Brown's Business College. She worked as a bookkeeper at Victoria Elevator. She was also a homemaker and farm wife. She moved to Galesburg in 1980 and lived with her son the past four years prior to living at Woodridge of Galesburg. She was a former member of Victoria United Methodist Church and attended Bethel Baptist Church in Galesburg. She most recently attended Berwick Baptist Church. She was a member of OSF St. Mary Medical Center Auxiliary Board and volunteered in many areas at the medical center for the past 30 years.
She was an organist and pianist and played and sang at many area weddings and funerals.
Cremation will be accorded. Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Tom Smith and Mrs. Eleanor Landon will officiate. Burial of her ashes will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Galva Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.
