This physician was an early advocate of vaccination, and an important member of the Philadelphia medical community. He was born during the early years of the Revolutionary War. His father, Daniel Coxe, was a Loyalist with deep ties in New Jersey as he himself descended from one of the Proprietors of West Jersey, Dr. Daniel Coxe. Dr. John Redman Coxe's mother, Sarah Redman Coxe, was the daughter of a noteworthy Philadelphia medical practioner, Dr. John Redman, and his wife Mary. John Redman Coxe was raised by his grandparents, in Philadelphia. He went abroad for his medical training, and after returning to Philadelphia, he was mentored by Dr. Benjamin Rush. He served as the Professor of chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania; chair of materia medica and pharmacy in the medical department, and wrote many texts and treatises in his area of medical expertise. Dr. Coxe and his wife had six children.
