His father was Curd Cox and his mother, Amanda Mary (Renfro) Cox

He married Elizabeth (Major) Cox 10 October 1878. She was born 24 July 1851 in Knox County, TN . She died 22 May 1916 in Knox, TN and was buried in the Fairview Baptist Cemetery,Corryton, Knox County, TN. Her father was John Major.

He was working on a farm and his family was all back in Tennessee when he had a tragic accident. From his obituary in the Harrington Citizens Newspaper: " While driving a team hitched to a tractor engine late Tuesday afternoon, Mr. John Cox stumbled and fell in front of the wheels, which passed over his right hip and back, inflicting injuries from which he died in two hours."

He was a member of the Masons who conducted his funeral.

Their children all born Knox Co., Tennessee.
