William Wallace Cox was the son of Brickhouse Bell Cox and his wife, Jane Bell Bray. He was born in Norfolk County, Virginia (now city of Chesapeake). He was married to Almeda P. Baum in 1877 in what was then Princess Anne County, Virginia (now city of Virginia Beach).

New information added August 30, 2012:
Princess Anne County, Virginia marriage records show the following -
"December 23, 1877 - William W. Cox, single, and Almedia P. Baum, single - William W. Cox, age 26, born in and residing in Norfolk County, Virginia, occupation Farmer, son of B.B. Cox and his wife, Jane B. - Almedia P. Baum, age 30, born in and residing in Princess Anne County, Virginia, daughter of Jacob Baum and his wife, Ann W."
