James "Ray" Cowles
(March 24, 1923 - February 11, 2015)
Mr. James "Ray" Cowles, Sr., age 91, of Hamptonville, formerly of North Wilkesboro, died Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at Pruitt House of Elkin. He was the only child born March 24, 1923 in Wilkes County to James Nelson Cowles and Rhetta Harris. He was married to Katheleen E. Cowles for 56 glorious years and together they had five children. James Ray Cowles Jr., of Oregon, Betty Jean Owens of Virginia, Carolyn Marie Kelly of Hamptonville, Judith Pamelia Cowles of Winston Salem and Michael S. Cowles of LA, California. He had three grandchildren, Dana McElveen, Eric Kelly and Victor Cowles, all of whom he loved dearly. He had six great grandchildren; one great great grandson and another on the way; and a brother, Frederick Cundiff. Mr. Cowles was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and J.P. Cundiff and Lucille Chilton.

Mr. Cowles was a US Army Veteran fighting in the Korean War. He lived long enough to enjoy five generations. Mr. Cowles worked for Carolina Mirror for 28 years until he had an accident in 1992. He was a devout member of Rickard's Chapel AME Zion Church. For their 50th Wedding Anniversary the children sent Ray and Kat on a cruise and they also went on numerous private trips. He will be deeply missed by all of his family and friends.

Funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday, February 15, 2015 at Miller Funeral Chapel with Rev. Richard Watts officiating. Burial with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guard Post 1142 in follow in Mountlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Miller Funeral Service from 12:30 until 1:30 pm on Sunday, prior to the service. Flowers will be accepted. Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.
