"Chester Ervin Cowardin was born July 7, 1888, on a farm near Hamburg, Iowa, to Jenny Elifrits and David Kennedy Cowardin, and died at a hospital in St Joseph, Dec. 12. He had been ill for two years, during which time he made his home with his sister, Mrs. George Steeby of Cameron.

He graduated from the Fillmore high school and attended college at Warrensburg. He taught school in Andrew County for 16 years. Later he became county collector, which office he held for eight years. He was also a deputy sheriff and a Boy Scout leader, as well as being very interested in political circles.

Mr. Cowardin moved to a farm near Savannah with his mother and cared for her until she died. He was a member of the Savannah Methodist Church, the Odd Fellows Lodge, Savannah Masonic Lodge No. 71 and the Eastern Star Chapter 223.

Mr. Cowardin was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mrs. Myrtle Fancher, and is survived by his sister, Mrs. George Steeby of Cameron; a brother, Jesse B. Cowardin of Lakewood, Colo.; six nieces and nephews, among them Albert Cowardin of Casper, Wyo., whom he and his mother reared.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Savannah Methodist Church, Rev. Albert F. Mutti officiated with interment in the Savannah Cemetery." Savannah Reporter and Andrew County Democrat (Savannah, Missouri), December 16, 1965
