Melvin was the son of Charles and Rosa Main Coulter and the husband of the former Elsie Best (remarried, see Elsie Moore), who survived. He was also survived by his children Melvin, Doretha Hanes, Marcelle Dodson, Janet Glass and Mary Clipp, 17 grandchildren, and sisters Mildred Swisher, Anne Mae Kelbaugh and Mabel Smith.
Melvin had worked as a car inspector at the Washington Terminal and had only moved to Florida a few months before he died.
Melvin was a member of the Brownsville Church of the Brethren.
