Evelyn Poline Mayo Couch
January 09, 1920 - April 23, 2010

JOPLIN, MO Evelyn Poline Couch, 90, of Joplin, left this life Friday, April 23, 2010, to begin her new life with her Lord and Savior.

Evelyn was born Jan. 9, 1920, in Joplin, to the late Galen and Bertha Lynn (Morris) Mayo.

She quit school to help her mother with her four brothers and four sisters around their home after her father passed away.

On April 11, 1938, she was united in marriage to Gordon Couch. To this union four children were born.

Evelyn was always working. She took in washing and did ironing for several years; she cleaned houses; then she went to work for Brooks Bottling Company, Elders Shirt Factory, McCoy's Flower Shop and finally retired from Mac's Donuts.

When Evelyn wasn't working, she enjoyed garage sales, cooking, quilting and collecting as well as restoring dolls.

She was an active member of the First Gospel Workers Church, where she played the organ and helped run the church thrift store. The church was very dear to her heart.

She was preceded in death by her husband; four brothers, James Mayo, Bill Mayo, Frank Carrico and Tom Carrico; and two sisters, Virginia Sperry and Marie Whited.

Evelyn is survived by two sons, Willard Wayne "Bud" Couch and Kenneth Lee Couch; two daughters, Gail Grace Smallwood and husband Jerry, and Carol Joan Carlton and husband Clarence Dwain, all of Joplin; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Moorehead and Jewell Hill; and three sister-in-laws, Loretta Mayo, Violet Carrico and Lyda Carrico.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, at the First Gospel Workers Church in Joplin, with pastor Phil Erwin officiating.

Burial will follow in the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin.

A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Monday at the Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary in Joplin.
