NANCY COUCH was the oldest of 12 children born to Joseph Elijah Couch, Jr., born South Carolina, and Catherine Patton, born North Carolina. She was born and raised on the family farm near Fairfield, Bedford Co., TN . In 1830 Nancy's father owned 3 Slaves.

Nancy married Daniel Stephens about 1829 in Bedford County. They lived near Wartrace where Daniel farmed and owned a General Store. Nancy was the mother of six sons and one daughter. After Nancy's early death, her husband went on to marry 3 more times and father 14 more children. Daniel Stephens served several terms as the Mayor of Wartrace, and was a Magestrate.

Nancy's mother, Catherine Patton Couch, lived on to the age of 90. In her Will she left one-seventh of her Estate to the "children of my deceased daughter Nancy Stephens". They each received $14.24.

Two of Nancy's sons lost their lives in the Civil War.
Pvt. Martin D. Stephens, Co. I, H, 27th Texas Cavalry, CSA, killed in battle near Columbus, MO May 20, 1862.
Pvt. Henry Michael Stephens, Co A, 19th Texas, CSA, captured at Oak Ridge, LA, died in the POW prison at Alton, IL Nov. 14, 1863

Two of Nancy's brothers also fought in the Civil War:
Capt. Reuben Calaway Couch, served in Co. F, 5th TN Calvary.
Dr. Robert W. Couch, Surgeon of the Regiment, 9th TN Calvary, CSA. captured at Fort Donelson, prisoner at Mound, IL, escaped, walked to Corinth, MS to rejoin his regiment.

Nancy's Grandparents were:
Joseph Elijah Couch, Sr. and Nancy Anna Connor
James Thomas Patton, Rev War NC 11th Calvary Morgan Dist Burke Co NC,
and Sarah Cunningham

Nancy's sons not yet Linked to her both went to Texas.
They were:
William Joyner Stephens, born abt 1835, married Lizzie Maddox
Martin D. Stephens, 1837-1862, m. Elizabeth Ponder in Titus Co., Texas.
