Betty Joe Cotton, of Midland, passed away Wednesday, February 27, 2008.

She was born March 6, 1922 to Joseph S. Kemp and Rose Lambert in El Paso, Texas where she was raised and educated. On May 28, 1942 she married J. Russell Cotton in El Paso, Texas. She attended the University of Texas in El Paso, Texas where she received a Bachelors Degree in Journalism. Prior to her retirement, Betty taught English and Journalism for over 20 years at Midland High School and Robert E. Lee High School. Betty was a member of the Twentieth Century Study Club; EnAmie Review Club; Community Bible Study and an active member of First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. Betty frequently volunteered at the Midland Battered Women's Shelter.

She was preceded in death by her parents and daughter, Linda G. Collom.

Betty is survived by her husband of 66 years, J. Russell Cotton of Midland, Texas; son, Dr. James R. Cotton, Jr. of Tyler, Texas; daughter, Laura Cotton of Midland, Texas; 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services have been scheduled for 2:00 P.M. Saturday, March 1, 2008 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Gary Dyer officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Keith Poe, James Mims, Chas McKenzie, Jim Bradshaw and Vernon Stokes.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be directed to First Baptist Church - Missions Fund, 2104 W. Louisiana, Midland, Texas 79701 or Hospice of Midland, P.O. Box 2621, Midland, Texas 79702.
