Dr. Edward Winslow Corson died Saturday, August 20, 2011.
Dr. Corson was born in Rahway, NJ, son of the late Katharine Hays Corson and Edward Winslow Corson, Sr. He graduated from Pingry Day School in Elizabeth, NJ and was a magna cum laude graduate of Amherst College, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. After college, he served in the United States Air Force as navigator for nine years. Following the service, he entered Southeastern Baptist Seminary in Wake Forest, NC, where he graduated with a Master of Divinity in 1966. While in seminary, he pastored at Wake Forest Baptist Church.
After a year's study at Yale Divinity School, he became an assistant professor of English and director of chapel services at Mercer University from 1967 – 1977. While on leave from Mercer, he obtained his PhD in English from the University of Georgia.
From 1977 until 2004, Ed worked at The Macon Telegraph. He served as editorial page editor, writer, columnist, public editor, and newsroom training coordinator. He also served as editor of the Macon News. After retiring from the Telegraph, he was a professor of English at Georgia College and State University. For the past five years, he has taught English full time at Macon State College.
Ed was a member of Vineville Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday School teacher, deacon and choir member since 1967. He served on the Board of Directors of the Christian Index for five years, the last year as Chairman of the Board. He was a member of Idle Hour Golf & Country Club and Howard Community Club. He has served on the Boards of the American Red Cross, Macon Arts Alliance, Booker T. Washington Center and Macon Crisis Line.
Ed is survived by his wife, Jean; his daughter, Katrina Knight (Tommy); two grandchildren, Mamie Katharine and Anna Victoria; brother, Richard Corson (Connie); niece, Julia Corson; nephew, Peter Corson.
