NEWPORT NEWS - Maynard Vincent Corson, son of Minnie Moger and George Asa Corson was born in Eclipse, Va., on June 14, 1920, and died on May 30, 2013.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Kenneth and wife Mary Virginia, and his nephew Kenneth Corson, Jr.
He was married for 68 years to Mary Charlotte Jones Corson of Dinwiddie County.
He is survived by his wife; one brother; two sons; and two grandsons.
Maynard was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Newport News where he participated in all phases of church activities, from teaching young people and adults in Sunday School, to serving as president of the Church Council. He was a member of the Bithynia Sunday School class, a co-chairman of the XYZ Club, past president of the District Methodist Men's Club and chairman of the district Trustees. He organized the Over the Hill Gang, a group of retirees who met regularly to take care of jobs around the church. Maynard was also a member of the May Club and of the Hampton Roads Chapter of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. After retirement, he sang with the Melonotes, a group who entertained at retirement and nursing homes. He enjoyed growing flowers and gardening and was always eager to try unusual flowers and plants. An unabashed optimist, he was always ready to tell a joke or learn a new one.
There will be a Celebration of Life Memorial Service at the First United Methodist Church in Hilton on June 8 at 11 a.m. Following the service, there will be a reception in the Fellowship Hall for family and friends. Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of the First United Methodist Church, 102246 Warwick Boulevard, Newport News, VA 23601. At his request, his body has been donated to the Virginia State Anatomical Division.
