MRS. MARY L. C. BRAINARD
Mrs. Mary Louise Cornell Brainard, 93, former Ellington resident, died at the home of her daughter, in Orlando, Fla., Sunday, June 26, 1955.
The widow of Leonard G. Brainard, who preceded her in death on March 23, 1929, Mrs. Brainard was born in the Town of Chautauqua on July 8, 1861, the daughter of Ephraim and Electa Hunt Cornell. She lived most of her life in Ellington before moving to Orlando. She was married to Mr. Brainard on Nov. 10, 1881.
Mrs. Brainard was a member of Ellington Congregational Church, a charter member of Ellington Grange 528 and was a Seventh Degree Grange member. She was the first woman deputy in Chautauqua County Grange work.
She moved to Orlando following her husband's death and was active there in the Congregational Ladies Aid and instrumental in founding the Farman Free Library. She also was active in the PTA in Florida and in church and guild groups, especially the John Knox Presbyterian Church Guild at Winter Park, Fla.
Mrs. Brainard is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Nellie M. Forbes, with whom she resided in Florida; Mrs. Edith A. Schwan of Orlando; Mrs. Bessie G. Mason of Conewango Valley and Mrs. Lois E. Colburn of Fredonia, Mrs. M. Doris Ericsson of Kennedy; a step-son, Bert H. Brainard of Loraine, Ohio; 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. A son, Earl C. Brainard, preceded her in death, Jan. 7, 1955.
Funeral services were held Monday at Orlando and a second service will be conducted at Ellington Congregational Church at 2 P.M. Thursday, followed by burial in Pioneer Cemetery, Ellington.
