John Wesley Corman was born on a farm south of Oak, NE. on November 30, 1927, to Farmer Allen and Grace Mariel (Virchow) Corman. John passed away on August 23, 2012, at the Brodstone Memorial Hospital in Superior, NE.
John attended grade school at the Blue Valley School and completed eight grades of education before going on to attend Nelson High School. After graduating in 1945, John and Johnny Horst went to California to work at an aircraft plant. Later John left the plant to work in his cousin's grocery store.
After deciding his fortune was not to be made in California, and coupled with being homesick, John moved back near Oak to farm with his dad.
On September 19, 1947, John married Shirley Carman in Ruskin and to this union five children were born. Following their marriage, John and Shirley moved to Endicott, Nebraska where John farmed with his brother-in-law, Albert Ahrens.
In 1948, John purchased his brother Bob's farming operation and John and Shirley began farming on the Little Blue River near the Scout Cabin east of Angus. It was tough at first after the river flooded out the first two years of crops. But they persisted and eventually moved to a farm on the Little Blue River 2 ˝ miles northwest of Oak. John and Shirley's marriage would later end in divorce.
On February 22, 1973, John married Cloma (King) Jensen in a ceremony in Las Vegas, Nevada and then returned to continue John's farming operation. In 1986, John and Cloma purchased the J.L. Scroggin residence in Oak and continued to call it home at the time of John's death.
John had many interests and served on several boards during his life. He had a passion for aviation and took flying lessons in the early 1960's. He became an accomplished pilot and owned his own plane. He enjoyed giving friends and family rides while using the plane to scout crops and assess irrigation usage above his farm on the Little Blue.
He was completing his 13th year as the Mayor of Oak at the time of his death and was a past Master of the Masonic Lodge. He volunteered as a fireman, served on the Nuckolls County Feeders Association, was a past chairman of the Oak Celebration Committee, was member of the Oak Community Church and served on its board. He also was a past member of the boards of the Irrigation Association, Clay County Mutual Insurance Company, Carlen School Board and Oak School Board.
John had many pastimes including hunting, fishing, traveling, playing cards, watching his grandchildren compete in their sporting events, visiting with friends and occasionally enjoying a game of chance.
For many years, John owned thoroughbred racehorses and enjoyed watching them run and win several races.
John loved his life and the people who enriched it. But it's the many, many lives he himself touched that will remain his greatest legacy.
