Helen Margaret Corcoran "Ella" Barnes, 86, went in peace to the Lord on September 27, 2011 surrounded by her family. She was born in Bonnybridge, Scotland on March 25, 1925 to Thomas and Mary Corcoran. Helen was preceded in death by her loving husband, Shelby "Doc" Barnes, who met his "wee bonnie lass" while stationed overseas during WWII. For the next 65 years, she called Houston home.
Helen is survived by her four children: Carol Ann and husband Charles Idol; Theresa Mary and husband Darell Etlinger; Alice Julia and husband Charlie Rizzo; and son Thomas Leon Barnes and wife Karen. She was blessed with 8 grandchildren: Ted, Craig, Cheryl, Cindy, Chris, David, Alex, and Colin, and numerous great grandchildren.
A devout Catholic, Helen was a parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima in Galena Park, TX. She was active in numerous church and civic organizations, and enjoyed travel, gardening, knitting, and spending time with family and friends.
Visitation will be held at Forest Park Westheimer on Friday, September 30, 2011 from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. with a rosary to begin at 7:30. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 625 Nottingham Oaks Trails, on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Rosewood Cemetery, Humble, TX.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to A-Med Hospice and to Pat Jackson and all the caregivers at Autumn Grove Cottage, Katy, who so lovingly cared for our Mom. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to the Alzheimer's Association .
