Funeral services were held for
Mrs. Margaret Corcoran Battle, 91,
widow of Thomas Battle, Saturday
morning at 10 from St. Mary's Catholic
Church with Rev. Dennis E.
Lynch officiating. Burial was made
in Fairview cemetery, Copenhagen.
The bearers were:. Nelson Scherer,
Ellsworth Hodge, Arthur Frink,
Bernard Buchal, Lawrence Byrnes,
Mrs. Battle died Thursday morning
at 7:35 after seven years of
failing health due to the infirmities
of old age.
She was born Oct. 18, 1850 in
Harrisburg in a log cabin, the
daughter of Murty and Mary Ann
Bannon Corcoran. Both her parents
were born in Ireland and came
to this country at an early age.
They were among the pioneer settlers
of Harrisburg. She attended
school in the little school near the
Lacy farm, but at the age of 14 she
started the career of dressmaker which she had practiced all her life.
In May 25, 1876 she was married
to Thomas Battle of Harrisburg in
the Harrisburg Catholic Church by
Rev. Father Fields, then local pastor.
She was the fifth of nine children
and the last of the, family.
After their marriage Mr. and
Mrs. Battle lived at Harrisburg
about three years and then spent
a year on the Humphrey farm near
They leased the Thomas Carroll
farm, at Deer River for seven years,
then moved to the Corcoran block
in Copenhagen where they lived until
their home was burned. At that
time they returned to their homestead
in Harrisburg. Twenty-six
years ago they moved to Copenhagen,
where Mr. Battle died Sept.
Mrs. Battle is survived by a son,
William R. Battle, Copenhagen and
two daughters, Ruth, who is assistant
postmaster of Copenhagen and
Florence, who is chemistry teacher
in the Leavenworth High school,
