COOPER, Daniel Martin
Jan. 31, 1925 ~ Nov. 4, 2009
Born in Los Angeles, California, "Danny" Cooper was a long time resident of the Antelope Valley. He arrived at Muroc, Calif., with his family when he was 12 years old, and attended the one room school there before Edwards Air Force Base was established. His family then moved to Boron, and he finished his early schooling at Antelope Valley High School in 1942. He enlisted in the Navy right out of High School and spent three years as a radioman flying air patrols on PBM Mariner flying boats in the Atlantic and Caribbean during the Second World War. On July 7, 1945, Danny married his childhood sweetheart, Dolores Luglan, of Acton, Calif. The couple returned to Boron after he was discharged from the Navy, and Danny went to work as a laborer at the Pacific Coast Borax Mine. He wanted a career as a mining engineer and entered the Colorado School of Mines the following September. In 1950, Danny graduated with an Engineer of Mines Degree in Coal Mining. He started his career working at Kaisers Sunnyside Mine at Dragerton, Utah. However, after five years, the Coopers returned to Boron where Danny spent most of his mining career. He rose from a junior mining engineer to foreman, senior mining engineer, and Assistant Mine Superintendent of the Boron Open Pit. In 1962, he became a Director of the Antelope Valley-East Kern Water Agency. He served on the agency for ten years while they worked to bring Feather River water to the Antelope Valley. Dannys wife, Dolores, became well known in the Antelope Valley and Palm Springs as a painter of lovely desert scenes. She also taught oil painting classes. She died in Thousand Oaks, Calif., January 11, 1981. After Doloress death, Danny married Margie Buchanan Woolcott in 1982. For several years they ran Cooper Rehabilitation Services in San Bernardino, Calif. They later divorced, and he married Dawn Ellen Minette of Boron, Calif. Danny died at his son, Bruces home in Bakersfield after a short illness. Danny is survived by his three children, Bruce Marvern Cooper (and wife Donella) of Bakersfield, Gary Brandt Cooper of Mt. Shasta, Calif., and Catherine Ann Gemperline (husband James) of Healdsburg, Calif., four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held on November 14, 2009, from 1 to 3 p.m., at the home of Tara and Andre Hughes in Bakersfield, Calif.
