Son of Philip B. and Chester Ann Coppage, the deceased was born on Nov. 8, 1874, at Trenton, Tenn. He moved to Caruthersville in 1898, and was for a time employed by J.M. Ward, later becoming Mr. Ward's partner in merchantile and other ventures, and eventually owning the Ward-Coppage Gin and Elevator. In recent years he and Mrs. Coppage had spent much of their time in Florida, Hot Springs and other points.
On July 24, 1901, Mr. Coppage was married to Jessie B. Huffman. No children were born to them but they reared Joyce S. Huffman (Mrs. J.R. Hutchison) and Joe Curtis Coppage.
Mr. Coppage was active in baseball in his earlier years in Caruthersville and being a lover of horses, he maintained a few race horses for thirty years or more.
The Rev. W.L. Meyer and the Rev. J. Murray Taylor conducted the funeral from the residence at 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Active pall bearers were Earl M. Coppage, Jr., Joe Bob Coppage, Frank Long, Jr., Robert Mehrle, Leonard Limbaugh and William H. Johnson, Jr. Honorary pall bearers were Charles E. Watson, Dr. J.B. Luten, Dr. F.L. Ogilvie, Dr. G.C. Bishop, Dr. G.W. Phipps, John VanAusdall, Sr., Chris Mehrle, John Chaffin, Floyd Ballard, Harry Ridgley, Curtnew Pierce, N.W. Helm and D.P. Randolph.
Survivors include Mrs. Coppage, a sister, Miss Carrie Coppage of Miami, Fla., and a brother, Phil C. Coppage.
Interment was in Little Prairie cemetery.
