OBIT:

Joe A. Copening, 54, Frisco agent at Nichols Junction, and his nephew, Etch. Sgt. Edward Copening, 23 who recently returned from the China-India-Burma Theater of Operations, were killed instantly Monday evening near Miller when their car skidded into a transport truck. They were returning to Springfield from a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Jess Copening at Mt. Vernon when the accident occurred.

Sgt. Copening is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Copening of Swedebourg. Besides his parents, Sgt. Copening is survived by one sister. Joe A. Copening is a son of the late William Copening, who reared his family on the old Copening place near Niangua.

Besides his brother, Paul, J. A. is survived by his wife and son, and another brother, Jesse, of Mount Vernon; two half-sisters, Mrs. Taylor Mahanay of Springfield and Mrs. John Elmore of Niangua; one half-brother, Bernie Copening of Kansas City, and his aunt, Mrs. Elen Puett, the sole survivor of the William Copening family.

Funeral services for Sgt. Copening will be held at Swedebourg today with burial at Richland. Funeral arrangements for Joe Copening are incomplete pending arrival of his only son from Baltimore, Maryland.
