Death: Aug. 19, 2003

Bobbie Lee Chapman Copeland, 89, of Lawrenceville died Wednesday, August 19, 2003. Born in Hartwell, Georgia in 1914, Mrs. Copeland was raised in Hart County and attended high school at Madison A & M in Madison, Georgia, where she excelled at athletics, especially basketball. Her talents impressed her basketball coach, Wally Butts, who later became the legendary head football coach of the University of Georgia. He tried to talk her into pursuing basketball in college. She chose matrimony instead and married Mose Copeland and moved to his home in Gadsden, Alabama, where she raised her family and lived until moving to Lawrenceville, Georgia in 1987. Mrs. Copeland is survived by two sons: Gary Copeland, a retired executive with Kraft Foods residing in Plant City, Florida, and Steve Copeland, president and owner of Shepco Paving Company in Conyers, Georgia. Surviving grandchildren are Kim Copeland Smith of Plant City, Florida, Lesa Copeland Rissler of Suwanee, Georgia, Kristen Copeland Taylor of Birmingham, Alabama and Lyndie Copeland of Suwanee, Georgia, and four great grandchildren.
