Civil War Union Officer. Enlisting as a Private on June 4, 1861, he was mustered into Company A of the 30th Pennsylvania Infantry and was ultimately assigned to the staff of Gouverneur Kemble Warren to serve this general officer as Aide-de-Camp (ADC). On April 1, 1865, then Captain Cope was brevetted Lieutenant Colonel, United States Volunteers, for "gallant and meritorious service during the war." Post-war, he was one in the assemblage of men who founded the present-day Gettysburg National Military Park in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He subsequently relied on his skill as an engineer to survey this park's environs to produce a comprehensive map that illustrated the battlefield as it may have looked to the Confederate and Union forces that were engaged there July 1-3, 1863. "The Cope Map", as it became known, remains a valuable resource to those who seek a greater understanding and perspective of the Gettysburg conflict. Historians and authors frequently cite and refer to its historical significance.
