Barnet M. Cooperman, Judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court, (Ret.), born October 29, 1922 in Los Angeles. Died peacefully on September 17, 2011 at his home in Beverly Hills.

Preceded in death by his wife of almost sixty-one years, Roz Cooperman. Survived by his sons, Bruce (Jaye), Dan (Mary), Bill (David), Andy (Christine), daughter Meredith Abber (Jason), nine loving grandchildren, Julia, Wesley, Jolie, Shayna, Deborah, Natalie, Michael, Carter, and Adam, and dear friend and companion of the past two years, Shelley Gallenson.

Barney graduated with honors from UCLA in 1943 and was awarded Phi Beta Kappa. He then entered law school at Boalt Hall in Berkeley, CA.

Barney's legal education was interrupted by his service overseas in World War II, where he was a combat infantryman with the 4th Armored Division in Patton's 3rd Army. Barney served with great distinction and was awarded two Silver Stars and a Bronze Star for heroism in combat.

Following the war Barney returned to law school, where he met Roz at International House. They married on June 29, 1947 in Brooklyn NY. After Barney graduated from Boalt Hall in 1948, the couple settled in Los Angeles, built their home on Hidden Valley Place and raised their family.

Barney entered private legal practice and handled a wide variety of civil and criminal cases until 1980, when he was appointed as a Judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court by Governor Jerry Brown.

Barney served with great diligence on the bench until his retirement in 1995, with his tenure most notably including the Appellate and Class Action departments of the Superior Court.

Barney then entered private dispute resolution practice as a judge, arbitrator and mediator, first with JAMS, then ADR. He loved his work as a judge and mediator and was able to work until shortly before his passing.

Barney was active in Democratic politics and community affairs. He was a founder of the West Side Democratic Club, organized local Democratic Nominating Committees, served as Chair of the West Side Democratic Club, and was a member of the state Democratic Central Committee.

Barney also served on the boards of public radio station KPFK, a teacher-training nursery school and Temple Israel of Hollywood.

In 1994, he was Alumnus of the Year of John Marshall High School. Barney was a lifelong supporter of civil liberties and liberal causes.

Barney was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, a terrific lawyer and judge, and a true citizen of this country. He will be greatly missed and always loved.

Funeral services are planned for Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 12:00 p.m. at Mount Sinai Memorial Parks and Mortuaries in Hollywood Hills.
