Madge C. Cheek, of Manchester, Md., formerly of Kingsville, Md., died Sunday, Feb. 15 in Manchester, Md.
She was the daughter of the late John Alexander Cooper & Matilda Spencer. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Lee A. Cheek, who died in 1995 and also two granddaughters.
Mrs. Cheek was a 1927 graduate of Bel Air High School and had been a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church and Kingsville Baptist Church. She retired as medical librarian at the Edgewood Arsenal after 30 years of service and was inducted into the Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame in 1990 for her leadership and lobbying efforts for senior citizens. She helped to organize the Baltimore County Association of Senior Citizens Organizations (BCASCO) and served as its president, vice president, director and legislative chairman. She also served as vice president of Maryland Advocates for Aging, president and delegate of the United Seniors of Maryland, and was active in AARP. She was an appointed member of the Maryland State Commission on Aging, the Baltimore County Commission on Aging and the Maryland Delegation for the White House Conference on Aging. She was also appointed by Governor Harry Hughes as one of the first ombudsman to serve under the Maryland Commission on Aging.
She is survived by one daughter, Alden Jackson of Maryland.; one son, Donald Cheek of Glenville; nine grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Lexie Quillen of Maryland and Oleita Shaffer of Florida; and one brother, Darrell Cooper of Bel Air.
