Matthew Goodwin Cooper, 26, of Roanoke County, died July 15, 2006. He is survived by his immediate family: parents, Jerry and Sandy Cooper; brother, Len Cooper of Margate, Fla.; sister, Diane Simmons of Atlanta, Ga.; three young nephews and a niece. Matthew was the grandson of the late Hazel and Bill Goodwin, and Martha and Pete Cooper, and nephew of Jugie and Barbara Goodwin of Roanoke, Norma and Bobby Williams of Salem, and the late Ellen Ballou. He was recently preceded in death by Peg McCurry, a beloved former neighbor and family friend whom Matt would call his "second mom." A 1998 graduate of Glenvar High School, Matt was a caring son, outgoing, fun-loving, creative, and full of humor. He loved the children he was uncle to, and always asked about them despite their living out of state. He was trusting to a fault, and considered everyone he met to be a friend. Matt struggled with a seizure disorder for 16 years, and many invested in helping him along. The family is especially grateful to Patty Thompson, who helped Matt in the many practical aspects of day to day life, and to Becky Clark, who extended unconditional friendship to him. The family will receive friends at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Cornerstone Church, 6930 Wood Haven Road NW, Roanoke, Va. 24019 with service immediately following, Pastor Mike Wilshire officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cornerstone Church. Roanoke County, Virginia
