Civil War: Company I, 7th California Infantry

James A. Cooper was a resident at Nevada City, California, when he enlisted as a private November 12, 1864. He was mustered into Company I, 7th California Infantry, November 17. Private Cooper was posted to Arizona Territory. He returned to California and was mustered out with his company at the Presidio of San Francisco March 31, 1866 (Orton, 790). After the war he returned to Nevada City and later relocated to Virginia City, Nevada, where he married the widow S. J. Clark (maiden name unknown; born about 1834, NY). According to the 1870 Census, James was living in Virginia City in June with his wife and step-daughters Jennie Clark (born 1853, NY) and Carrie Clark (born 1855, Iowa), and step-son Adam (born 1857, MO). James died just a few months later.
