Big Stone Gap, Va. Velton Cooper, 83, passed away early Thursday (June 2, 2011) morning at the home of his son, Kenneth Cooper.
Mr. Cooper was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army of the United States. He was of the Holiness Faith and a life long resident of the area.
He was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Beulah Cooper, brothers, Alvis Cooper, Dewey Cooper, Walter Cooper, and Lloyd Cooper, sister, Zelma Deboard, son, Gary Wayne Cooper, and daughter, Debra Joan Cooper.
Mr. Cooper is survived by his son, Kenneth Cooper and daughter-in-law, Melody of Big Stone Gap, daughter, Debra Chandler and husband, Teddy of Big Stone Gap; sisters, Stella Christian of Appalachia and June Cooper of Big Stone Gap. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Zac Cooper and Billy Chandler and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday (June 4, 2011) at Gilliam Funeral Home, Big Stone Gap. The funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. in the chapel of the funeral home with Pastor Duke Barker.
Military graveside rites will be accorded by the Local DAV and VFW Units and the National Guard Unit from Gate City, Va. Sunday (June 5, 2011) at 2 p.m. at the American Legion Cemetery in Big Stone Gap.
Family and friends are asked to assemble at Gilliam Funeral Home to leave in procession at 1:30 p.m.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
