Gene Quincy Cooper Sr., age 82, of Coal City, passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2011 at the Raleigh General Hospital, following a sudden illness.
Born on July 6, 1928 at Vanwood (aka Mead), W.Va., he was the son of the late John Q. Cooper and Dessie Daniels Cooper.

Mr. Cooper was a disabled coal miner with 35 years of service, and was a member of the Oak Grove Christian Church. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, and had made his home at Coal City for most of his life.

Mr. Cooper was preceded in death by his first wife Earlene Cooper, and by a sister, Helen McKinney.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Wanda Jean Massey Cooper, five children, James “Butch” Cooper and his wife Rebecca of Beckley; Patricia Cooper Sanger and her husband Franklin of Midway; John L. Cooper Sr. and his wife Pamela of Cool Ridge; Gary Cooper and his wife Renee of Danese; and Gene Quincy Cooper Jr. of Hagerstown, Md.; 13 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren are also among his survivors.

Mr. Cooper was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Oak Grove Christian Church on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 1 p.m., with Pastor Joe Schmidt, Pastor Rick Absher, and Pastor Rick Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until service time.

Mr. Cooper’s sons and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
