He graduated from Lebanon High School and Wabash College at Crawfordsville where he became a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.
Before he completed his medical studies, he served in the U. S. Army during WWII. He was wounded and received the Purple Heart and a Silver Star for bravery.
He completed his medical studies in Osteopathy in Kirksville, Missouri and served his residency in Lansing, Michigan.
He returned to Lebanon where he practiced with his father until his father retired. Dr. Coons was actively practicing at the time of his death assisted by his 28 year office manager Linda Portish.
He was married in Lebanon on April 4, 1943, to Norma Jean Thompson Coons. They divorced.
For 25 years he was a companion to Joseph Brandon who is deceased.
He served the community in various capacities throughout his career. He was the sports physician for the Lebanon High School for a number of years, served as the Boone County Health Officer for many years and took pride in his membership and activity in the Lebanon Rotary Club where he had been president and maintained perfect attendance for 56 years.
He enjoyed music, singing, playing the piano, and puzzles.
He was a member over 25 years at St. Paul's Episcopal Church where he was a former member of the Pro Musica and an active member of the choir.
Survivors: two sons: Rolfe N. Coons and Garth A. Coons and wife, Cheryl, 18 Grandchildren and 12 Great Grandchildren.
A son, Robert Bruce Coons, and two brothers, John D. Coons and Dr. Ritchie Coons, are deceased.
