OBITUARY - Plain Dealer, Wabash (IN)
Louise Coon, three year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Coon Jr., 516 East Hill street, died about 3:20 o'clock Sunday afternoon en route to the Wabash County hospital after being struck by Wabash passenger train No. 1 due at the Wabash station at 3:13 o'clock.

The child, who had been playing in the back yard of her home which abuts the railroad tracks, wandered directly into the path of the westbound train just after the train had rounded the curve a short distance east of the scene of the accident. Engineer Earl "Smiler" Mays, Peru, said he was unable to avoid hitting the small girl. Apparently the child was struck by the cow-catcher. She was thrown clear of the train.

Four small boys, James Sparks, Kenneth Ward, Orval Warren and William Patton, were playing along the tracks at the time and witnessed the accident. Together they moved the girl from the side of the tracks where she fell after being struck, laying her on the grass nearby. Chief of Police Frank S. Gurtner and Officer Robert Marks went to the scene of the accident after being called and the child was removed by ambulance to the Wabash County hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The father of the little girl, Howard Coon, was visiting with relatives in Attica at the time of the tragedy and did not arrive here until late Sunday evening. Other members of the train crew were P.C. Bergman, Peru, conductor, D. Kinzie, brakeman, E.T. Dempsey and W.C. Norris.

The child is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Coon Jr., one brother, Lawrence and one sister, Marilyn. A sister, Shirley Ann, died several years ago. Grandparents and several aunts and uncles also survive.

The body was removed to the Wire Funeral home. It was taken to the Esta Sopher home on Elm street Monday morning but will be returned to the funeral home for short services at 2:15 Tuesday afternoon. Funeral services will follow at 2:30 o'clock at the Church of the Nazarene with Rev. J. Paul Tucker in charge. #Burial will be in Falls cemetery.
