Charlotte Hay Coombs was the daughter of James Parker Coombs and Mary Ella Thompson. She was born at Wakpala, a farm in Freeport, Maine which has since been established as an Audubon Society bird sanctuary.
Charlotte was married (1) on 23 March 1932 in Brooklyn, New York to Jules DeGrond, son of Jules DeGrond and Minnie Van de Hoff. The marriage ended in divorce.
She was married (2) on 14 June 1939 in Cold Spring, New York to Candido Arango, son of Candido Arango Garcia and Manuela Estrada Suarez. That marriage also ended in divorce.
Charlotte dropped out of school at the age of 16, but at the age of 48, she obtained her GED and then entered the University of Maine as a special student. She did well during her first year and in 1964 graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in English. It was her proudest moment.
At her request, her body was cremated and her ashes were scattered on Frenchman's Bay off Bar Harbor and on Casco Bay off Portland, Maine.
