Birth: unknown
Death: 1891

Cooley who enlisted in the U. S. Army as a private in Ohio on Aug. 18, 1861. He served in Company G, 49th Infantry Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, part of the "Buckeye Vanguard." He fought throughout the war and mustered out as a full sergeant in Texas after the war ended. His service saw him take part in some of the most dangerous and well-known battles of the war, including Shiloh, Chickamauga, Franklin, Nashville and the campaign to capture Atlanta. After the war, his family moved from Missouri to Goldendale in Klickitat Co. WA. He became ill in 1889 and died. He was buried with only a plot number to mark the location of his remains.

I have made this memorial because of an article I read today in the Seattle Times about a group called Grave Concerns Assoc., Chair Laurel Lemke where they have made it possible to place names on gravesites instead of numbers as the law required. When the government found out about Charles Cooley they paid for a veteran's stone to be placed at the cemetery and now he has a memorial here. He is not forgotten. Sandy Boudrou.
