Benjamin Clark Cooley III, a resident of Wenatchee for the past 35 years, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000 at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee.
He was born on July 26, 1916 at San Marcial, NM to Benjamin Clark Cooley II and Blanche Marie (Machen) Cooley. As a young boy, Benjamin moved around with his family due to his father's career as a railroad engineer. He eventually ended up in El Paso, TX where he graduated from high school.
After graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy with the aim of attending the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD and in fact, was later discharged into the Annapolis Naval Academy. While in the Navy, Benjamin received Masters Degrees in Mathematics and Meteorological Engineering.
In June of 1940, he married Virginia Momm at New London, CT and in 1960, retired from the Navy at the rank of Commander.
They then moved to Napa, ID where he attended the College of Idaho and received his teaching credentials. He taught at Coldwell High School for a period of two years. In 1965, they moved to Wenatchee where he taught at the Wenatchee Valley College until his retirement 15 years later.
Benjamin was a member of the American Legion Post #10 of Wenatchee and also a member of the Retired Officers Association (TROA).
He is survived by his wife, Virginia of the family home; a son and a daughter, Benjamin C. Cooley IV of Winslow and Sandra J. Hill of Elk; brother, Walter Cooley of Central Point, OR; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
At Benjamin's request, no formal service will be held, although memorials may be made in Benjamin's name to the Salvation Army or the Wenatchee Valley Humane Society.
