Kathryn Cookson Compton, 79, of 328 N. Courtney Drive in Connersville, died Sunday, August 28, 2005 at her home. She had been in ill health for some time.
She was born November 18, 1926, in Bloomington, IN, one of three daughters of Thomas A. and Mignon White Cookson.
Kathryn graduated from University High School in Bloomington in 1944. She became a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority at Indiana University, where she graduated in 1948 with a degree in speech and English. In 1944 she joined Tri Kappa in Bloomington and was later in chapters in Noblesville, Indianapolis, Rushville, and Connersville. She was married on June 19, 1948 in Bloomington at the Bloomington Methodist Church to Charles William "Bill" Compton, whom she met while attending Indiana University. That same year Kathryn and her sisters, Ruth and Louise, were initiated into PEO Chapter AE in Bloomington. She was a charter member of PEO Chapter BC in Indianapolis and later a member of M Chapter in Rushville. She taught second grade in 1963 and 10th grade English from 1964 to 1969 in Rushville. After moving to Connersville, in 1969, she taught 8th and 9th grade English at Junior High North. She retired in 1979. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, an honorary teachers' association. She had been active in several organizations, including First United Methodist Church, the Dorothy Canfield Literary Club, the Blue and Gray Civil War Roundtable and served on the board of the Fayette County Library. Her love of books was a very special gift to residents of several convalescent homes as she read weekly to them for 16 years. At Frazee School she served as a mentor for 3 years.
Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Josalyn Compton of Connersville, Bill and Christina Compton of Bloomington, John and Jean Compton of Concord, Michigan, and Bob and Connee Compton of Carmel; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren; a sister in law and her husband, Mary Ann and Thomas S. Teetor of Fort Wayne.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles William "Bill" Compton, who passed on September 30, 2002, a brother in law, David Meid Compton, a daughter-in-law, Becky Compton and sisters Ruth Cookson and Louise Cookson Funk.
Funeral services will be Thursday September 1, 2005 at 11:00 am at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Helms pastor of the church officiating.
Burial will be in Dale Cemetery.
Friends may call on Wednesday, August 31, 2005 from 4-8 pm at Urban Winkler Funeral Home and 1 hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made at the funeral home to the First United Methodist Church Elevator Fund or to the Fayette County Cancer Society.
