Abram James (A.J.) Cook was born in Smith Co., Mississippi to David Cook and Louisa Jane Merchant. His mother died in Mississippi; when he was 9 years old, in 1856, he, his two sisters (Mary Jane Cook & Matilda Ann Cook) and his father and stepmother, Rebecca Fletcher Cook, moved to Smith Co., Texas. He joined the Confederate Army in 1864 and served as a guard at Camp Ford, Tyler, Texas, the largest prison camp west of the Mississippi River. He and Smith Terrell Shelton, his brother-in-law by marriage to his sister, Mary Jane Cook Shelton, served at Camp Ford together. At the end of the Civil War, they surrendered and were transferred to Marshall, Texas until they were processed out and released to come home back to the Pleasant Retreat Community, Tyler, Smith Co., Tx.

Married Josephine Cooke, Jan. 1870. They were the parents of six children. These children are:

His second marriage was to Mary Magdalene Sinclair on Oct. 5, 1905. They were also parents to six children.
