Nathaniel Cook enlisted in the Confederate Cavalry , Company A, Kentucky 1st Cavalry Battalion on October 20, 1861 at Prestonburg, Kentucky. He was at the Battle of Middle Creek where he was mortally wounded. He died on Beaver Creek, Floyd County , Kentucky from his wounds. He was buried by the Joseph Gearheart family in the family cemetery located on the Gearheart Family Farm. The soldier was unknown to the Gearhearts at the time of burial. He later was identified.
On November 1, 2003 a new military headstone was set for Private Nathaniel Cook in the Gearheart Cemetery in Floyd County, Kentucky.
His family cherish the memory of this gallant soldier and is so glad that he has been identified and now has a fitting headstone and now rests with many other Confederate veterans, known and unknown, awaiting the final roll call of our Heavenly Father.
