James H. Conroy, Banker Here, Dies
Executive Vice President of Manufacturer Trust Co. for Last 11 Years
Began As A Clerk At 14
Planned Details Of Brooklyn Participation in Liberty Loan Drives in War.
James H. Conroy, executive vice president and member of the board of the Manufacturers Trust Comapny, died Thursday eveing in St. Vincent's Hospital at the age of 68. He had lived at 755 Park Avenue.
Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Conroy attended St. Patrick's Academy there and began his career as a junior clerk in the Brooklyn Bank at the age of 14. In 1905 he joined the Citizens Trust Company of Brooklyn as a secretary. In 1914, the bank was absorbed by the Manufacturers Trust Company, Mr. Conroy continuing in the position of secretary with the enlarged institution.
He was made Vice President of the Manufacturers Trust in 1919 and executive vice president in 1928.
During the World War Mr. Conroy worked out the details of active participation for all the Brooklyn banks in the four Liberty Loan drives. In 1926 he was named a member of the subcommittee on finance, budget and revenue of the City Planning and Survey Committee.
Mr. Conroy was a member of the Brooklyn Chamber of COmmerce and the Bankers Club of Brooklyn and active in the Brooklyn Federation of Jewish Charities and the Cardinal's Committee of Laity of Catholic Charities. He was a sustaining member of the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Banking.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Conroy, and three daughters, Miss Ethel M. Conroy, Miss Kathleen F. Conroy and Mrs. WIlliam R. Gannon of Jersey City.
