Obituary:
The Rev. Dr. Paul Luther Conrad of Winston-Salem died Sunday, September 19, 2010 at the age of 79. Pastor Paul was born to the Rev. Dr. Flavius and Mary Huffman Conrad on April 20, 1931 in High Point, North Carolina. Pastor Paul, a polio survivor of 63 years, served four parishes in the North Carolina Synod, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America: Concordia, China Grove; Prince of Peace, Kinston; St. Paul, Statesville; and Epiphany, Winston-Salem. After his retirement, Pastor Paul served as interim pastor at St. Paul, Statesville; Nazareth, Rural Hall; Concordia, China Grove; and St. Michael, High Point. Pastor Paul was an active member and Pastor Emeritus of Epiphany Lutheran Church. Pastor Paul was preceded in death by his parents and brother, the Rev. Dr. Leslie Conrad. He is survived by his soulmate and loving wife of 54 years, Dr. Katherine (Kay) Oxner Conrad; brother, the Rev. David Conrad; sisters, Dr. Rachel Conrad Wahlburg and Rebekah Conrad Miller; daughters, Tina Conrad Kestner and Laura Conrad Spain; son, the Rev. Jonathan Conrad; sons-in-law, Dr. Michael Kestner and Michael Spain; daughter-in-law, Dr. Kristen King Conrad; and grandchildren, Hannah Katherine Kestner, Joshua Kie Kestner and Rebekah Marie Spain. Pastor Paul was a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne University and Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. He served as president of Lenoir Rhyne University's Alumni Association and as chair of the Lenoir-Rhyne Loyalty Fund. He also served as a trustee on the boards of Lenoir-Rhyne University, Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, and Lutheran Services for the Aging. Pastor Paul was chairperson for boards governing Goodwill Industries and Winston-Salem Industries for the Blind. He served as president of Kiwanis Clubs in both Statesville and Winston-Salem. Pastor Paul held membership on county school boards and social services boards. He was the North Carolina Synod's correspondent to The Lutheran magazine for twenty years. Pastor Paul's dedication to thoughtful and faithful practice of pastoral ministry, self-discipline and integrity in the faith, courage in the face of physical obstacles and love of humankind made him a remarkable person. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 25 at Epiphany Lutheran Church with the Rev. E. Ray Mohrmann and the Rev. Laura M. Wind officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday.
