U.S. Senator. He studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and graduated from the medical department of the University of Nashville, in 1864. During the Civil War, he served in the medical department of the Union Army, as an assistant surgeon assigned to Lake City Florida. Upon readmission of the State of Florida into the Union, he was appointed Florida State Treasurer in 1868, was a member of the Republican National Committee, (1868-72) and a member of the Florida State House of Representatives, in 1873. In 1873, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1879. After leaving the Senate, he was appointed United States Surgeon at Port Townsend, Washington, on the board of regents of the Agricultural College and School of Sciences of the State of Washington, in 1891 and practiced medicine there until his death at age 67.
