Dubuque Telegraph Herald - August 29, 2011

Andrew John Connolly, 28, of Dubuque, passed away Friday, Aug. 26, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer. Andrew remained true to his character, protecting family and friends by waiting to slip away peacefully with just his wife by his side.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Steve Rosonke officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa, where military rites will be accorded by the Iowa National Guard and the Dubuque American Legion Post 6. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 1:45 p.m.

Andrew was born on July 30, 1983, in Dubuque, son of Vince and Jean (Glab) Connolly. He graduated from Stephen Hempstead High School in 2002.

He married his true love, Jennifer Steines, on Mar. 17, 2008.

Andrew joined the Iowa National Guard in November 2000. He had two deployments: the first, a peacekeeping mission to Egypt, the second, a 22-month mobilization in Iraq. While in Iraq, Andrew served as a team leader and truck commander. In between deployments, he worked as a mason for Rock Bottom Masonry, coached wrestling at Senior High School and Jefferson Middle School, and attended the University of Dubuque, where he majored in business administration and achieved honor roll in the fall semester of 2007, before his diagnosis.

Andrew lived his life to the absolute fullest. He enjoyed outdoor activities, including fishing and golf. His competitive nature shone through during "friendly" games of poker and cribbage. He was the king of practical jokes. Spending time with family and friends, snuggling with his son, Brody, Connolly boys' movie nights, Iowa Hawkeyes football and wrestling, scroll sawing at the DAV, donation Sunday and "paying it forward" were all near and dear to Andrew's heart. His desire to advocate for other disabled veterans inspired The Andrew Connolly Veterans' Housing Act.

Surviving are his wife, Jennifer; a son, Brody; his mother, Jean; two sisters, Carolyn (Bill) Wiezorek and Cindy (Tim) McAndrew, both of Dubuque; five brothers, Bob (Rita) Connolly, of Bellevue, Iowa, Mike (Barb) Connolly, of Mount Vernon, Iowa, Joe (Pam) Connolly, Dan (Amy) Connolly and Nick (Nikki) Connolly, all of Dubuque; father-in-law, Joe Steines; mother-in-law, Lynn (Charlie Hemmer) Steines; a sister-in-law, Tara (Charlie) Cretsinger; two brothers-in-law, Jason (Lisa Friedman) Steines and Kyle Steines; and 29 nieces and nephews, all of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his father, Vince Connolly.
