DEATH OF PIONEER WOMAN
At about 6 o'clock Wednesday evening, June 9, Mrs. Elizabeth Callihan passed away at the home of her daughter at Oro Fino, after an illness of several weeks.
Mrs. Callihan was one of Scott Valley's pioneer women, having lived here for over forty years. She was the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Conner and was born in the state of Illinois on January 16, 1850, and at the time of her death was aged 70 years, 5 months and 23 days. A few years after her marriage to Thomas Callihan at Warsaw, Illinois she came to California with her husband and located in Scott Valley, where she resided until her death. She was the mother of six children, three of whom survive, Mrs. Alice Alford, Elmer and Martin Callihan.
Mrs. Callihan was a woman of a kind and loving disposition, and leaves many friends who are greatly saddened by her death. She was generous and thoughtful of others and no worthy cause or worthy person appealed to her in vain. She bore all of her sorrows and sufferings patiently and put her trust in God.
Besides her children mentioned above she leaves three sisters, Mrs. Willard Eastlick, and Mrs. A. J. Zitzman of Quartz Valley and Mrs. John Hamilton of Portland, four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews to mourn her loss.
The funeral services were held at the Greenview Church Saturday afternoon at one o'clock, Rev. Ray Smith of Fort Jones conducting the services, and the remains were laid tenderly away at the Fort Jones Cemetery beside her husband who passed away a number of years ago. The many beautiful floral offerings showed the high esteem in which Mrs. Callihan was held in this community. ------------
