Mary Conn Baker, a 14 year resident of Flower Mound, TX passed away June 14, 2010, after a long battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, October 9, at Annunciation Catholic Church, 808 College, Columbus, MS. Local arrangements by Gunter and Peel Funeral Home. Interment in Friendship Cemetery immediately after Funeral Mass. Father Robert Dore presiding, music by Margaret Mary Henry. The family will host a reception in the church activity hall following interment. Mary Martin Conn was born in Jackson, MS, to William Dow Conn and Gladys Cowart Conn on September 3, 1936. As a child she developed skill in drawing from her lawyer father and a love of painting, particularly watercolor, from her mentor, Elsie Mangum. Among her many awards was a cash prize of $50, a then astronomical sum. Majoring in Art and English Literature at MSCW, she was married in 1956 at Annunciation Church to Philip Baker, a petroleum geology major and Army ROTC student at Mississippi State. Mary quickly found life in the military and "oil patch" taking her family, which soon included two children, to many parts of the country and world. She sold her works where ever she traveled and was very proud of two actions: designing Christmas Cards for the American Club in Jakarta with proceeds going to local charities and teaching art to students from Singapore, Japan, Indonesia, Australia and the US. On return to the Houston area, Mary opened a shop in Old Town Spring, MCB Originals, stocked with art, cards, antiques, costumed teddy bears, and four resident roosters. The next stop was Fort Worth where she had a similar shop but no roosters. Clients remarked that Mary's work had a quiet and peaceful aura. After retiring due to health problems, the Bakers settled in Flower Mound to be near their granddaughters. Mary set up a studio in the front bedroom of their home and continued making note cards and Christmas ornaments, painting, and gifting all with her sense of joy and beauty. Mary was preceeded in death by her parents; a sister, Shirley Elizabeth Young and husband Robert; a brother, Gerry Conn and an infant son. Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Philip D. Baker; daughter, Janet Elizabeth Allen and husband Micheal; son, David Dow Baker and fiance Shannon Murray; granddaughters, Haley Nichole Baker and Kaylin Renee Baker; cousins, Dr. James W. Young (Margaret), David Young, and Sydney Ceil Garten; numerous extended family; and many friends.
