MUNCIE - Dorothea Rose Bump, 89, passed away Tuesday afternoon, February 26, 2008 at Westminster Village.

She was born November 22, 1918 in Muncie, the daughter of Gladys Melinda (Simpson) Conn and Leo Bernard Conn. Dorothea spent most of her childhood in various parts of the country and returned to the Muncie area in 1940.
As a newspaperwoman and former reporter for the Muncie Evening Press, she received numerous state and national awards for her writings. She was the first public relations director for Community Fund of Delaware County, now The United Way; was the co-founder and first coordinator of the Crisis Intervention Center; served on the board of directors of Muncie Civic Theatre in the 1950?s and was among those instrumental in the purchase of the present theater building on East Main Street. Dorothea also served on the board of directors of the Delaware County Mental Health Association; was chairman of the Richmond State Hospital Advisory Council; was a member of the Indiana Department of Mental Health Advisory Commission; served on the Widowed Persons Service coordinating board and was involved with the Beech Grove Cemetery Board. Other memberships include the Jones-Riley Club; the Women?s Press Club of Indiana; East Central Indiana Women in Communications; National Federation of Press Women and Women in Communications, Inc. At her husband?s death in 1984, she completed his term as Muncie city councilman and was elected to serve one additional term as city councilperson.
Survivors include her son, Michael R. Bump, (wife-Pamela), Three Rivers, Michigan; two grandsons, Geoffrey Bump, (wife Marla), and their children, Olivia and Eli; Gregory Bump, (wife-Marian), and their children, Henry and Charlotte and six loving nieces, Suzie, Jindy, Betsy, Kelly, Kim and Kathy, who are the daughters of Dorothea?s sister, Peggy and brother, Marvin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard E. Bump; one sister, Peggy Buis; and one brother, Marvin Conn.

A Memorial Service will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 2008 at Friends Memorial Church, 418 W. Adams St., Muncie, IN 47305, with Pastor Bill Wagoner officiating.

Private burial will be at a later date.

The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to a charity of donor?s choice.
