Death: May 26, 1968
Indiana, USA

A young Muncie mother was killed and three members of her family injured Sunday in a fiery four-car wreck in north-eastern Marion County.

The victim was Mrs. Cathy Irene Conn, 22 of 1006 W. 16th. Her husband, Charles, 23, was listed as critical and his mother, Mrs. Eileen Haskett, 55, of Orlando Florida was reported in fair condition in Community Hospital in Indianapolis. A son, Kent Raymond Conn, nine months, was treated at the hospital and released.

Authorities said a car driven by Jay Reno, 18, Indianapolis, slammed into a car being driven by Mrs, Conn's husband which was stopped for a triaffic light at Ind.67 and Post Road. Impact of the crash rammed the Conn car into one driven by Major Julius Adams, an Army reservist on his way to a weekly training session at Fort Benjamin Harrison. They said the Reno car bounced off the Conn vehicle and hit one driven by another reservist, Capt.
Harrison K. Robert.

The crashed ruptured the gas tank of the Conn car, Causing it to burst into flames and fatally burning Mrs. Conn.
Her husband, mother-in-law and son were pulled out of the burning car by three other Fort Benjamin Harrison reservists who were also driviing to the training session. PFC. John C. Simmonds and PFC. James E. Ruskaup and Sgt. Maj. A. Glen Elzroth were credited with saving lives of the three by Lawrence policeman who investigated.

Reno suffered a cut nose, was charged with reckless homicide, involuntary manslaughter and reckless driving.

Mrs. Conn graduated from Southside High School and was member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and Industry Evangilical United Brethren Church. Her husband is employed at Delco Battery here.

Surviving besides her husband and son are Mr. and Mrs. Herman Clark, and a sister, Mrs Mary Ann Vonderschmitt, all of Muncie.

The body was brought to Parson Mortuary.
