Virgie Hyman Cone, 100, former resident of Jasper, Florida, passed away on September 13, 2008, at Saint Francis Hospital, Greenville, South Carolina.Born September 3, 1908, in Brooksville, Florida, she was the daughter of the late Rev. George Hyman and Virgie Horne Hyman. She graduated from Florida State College for Women and later obtained her Master's degree from The University of Florida. She was an educator for many years at Lee High School in Jacksonville, Florida, serving as a Teacher, Guidance Counselor, Dean of Girls and lastly it's Principal. She was the first woman principal of a high school in Duval County. After she retired in 1975, she moved to Jasper and restored the house built by her Grandfather, the late Eli Horne. She did much of the work herself. She was appointed by the Governor of Florida to the Rehabilitative Services Advisory Committee. She was then asked to start an Area Agency on aging for District 3, which served 16 counties. She was the Executive Director for 5 years and spent much time lobbying for issues pertaining to the elderly. The Virgie H. Cone Mental Health Center in Hamilton County was dedicated in her honor.She is survived by her loving family, son, Edward Cone and his wife Ann; granddaughters: Mary Welbaum, Ginger Lawrence, Katie Waldrop and Trish Cone of Greenville; Grandson, Robert Hayes of Jacksonville; and granddaughter, Susie Cerni of Orlando, Florida; 15 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was pre-deceased by her husband, Edward Elbert Cone, daughter, Mollie Gentile, and brother, John Hyman.Virgie's goal was to celebrate her 100th birthday, which she did in style on Sept. 6.Graveside memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 8, 2008, at Evergreen Cemetery in Jasper.
