Lionel Pretoria "Big Train" Conacher
Birth: May 24, 1900
Death: May 26, 1954

Hall of Fame Professional Hockey Player. A native of Toronto, Ontario, Conacher played the position of Defense for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1925 to 1927, New York Americans from 1926 to 1930, and the Montreal Maroons from 1930 to 1933, and 1934 to 1937. From 1929 to 1930 he was also Head Coach of the New York Americans from 1929 to 1930. Conacher's brothers Roy and Charlie also played in the NHL. Conacher also excelled in other sports as well including, baseball, lacrosse, and football. A member of the NHL Second All-Star Team, Charter member of the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in 1955, Canadian Football Hall of Fame and Museum in 1963, and the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame and Museum in 1966. Conacher also entered politics and served in the Ontario Legislature in 1937 and then in parliament for another 12 years. On May 26, 1954, while playing in a softball match for charity, Conacher suddenly collapsed and died of a heart attack at the age of 54. In 1994 Conacher was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame as a player. (bio by: K)
