William & Hannah were among the first settlers of an area called Sugar Hill. It was northeast of the city called Orange. There were large groves of Maple trees that were used to make maple sugar. Around 10 families moved there in 1819-1820 after finding the area uninhabited.
On 1840 census 2 adults and 2 boys & 5 girls living in Orange, Steuben, New York.
After his wife died in 1850 he was living next door to his daughter Susan Thompson in Dix, Chemung co, NY when he died. He died the same day as the census was taken!
