Frank E. Colton Jr. 1908 ~ 2007 Together Again Our dear dad and grandpa left peacefully Tuesday morning with his devoted son-in-law Duane Butcher by his side, finally to be reunited with his beloved wife Katie. He had infinite love for his family and friends and was loved by all who knew him. Frank was a warm, gentle, and loyal man who left the world a better place for his having lived in it. Born on October 29, 1908 in Maeser, Uintah County, Utah, Frank was the fifth child and only son of Frank Edwin Colton Sr. and Elizabeth Jane Hacking. His mother tragically died before his second birthday and his father later married Phoebe Jane Merkley Bills, the widow of his friend George Bills Sr. Six more brothers and sisters plus a stepbrother were added to the Colton family. He is survived by one brother, Boyd Colton (Doris) and was preceded in death by seven sisters, Nellie Perry, Thora Mitchell, Annie Bench, Mar Caldwell, Elizabeth Lombardi, Clara Hall, Lela Goodrich; two brothers, Elmo Colton, Garth Colton and stepbrother George Bills. He was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Brenda Butcher and a grandson, Kip Dallas Colton. Frank attended Uintah Academy until he left to help his father on the family ranch. His early years were then spent working with his father proving up homesteads in Colorado, herding sheep and farming in the Ashley Valley area. He married his eternal sweetheart Katie Eliza Lind on Nov. 6, 1929 in Vernal and their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. Frank and Katie shared 65 years together before her death in 1994. Together Frank and Katie enjoyed fishing, bowling, playing Pinochle, traveling around the U.S., Canada and Mexico with their trailer, and spending time with their family. They had a daughter, Valene Butcher (Duane) and a son, Darryl Colton (Pat). Frank always wanted more education; but made his own success through his hard work and determination. He was a tireless worker whether on the ranch, in the coal mines, driving a truck, working at the arms plant or at the oil refinery. Even after his retirement from American Oil in 1973 he could be seen hard at work in his garden or helping out his family, friends and neighbors with their yards or homes. Besides his son and daughter, Frank is survived and will be lovingly remembered by: seven grandsons, Brent Butcher (Kris), Blake Butcher (Jane), Brad Butcher, Kirk Colton, Kyle Colton (Colleen), Keegan Colton, and Kendel Colton; two granddaughters, Bonnie Pace (Stan) and Bethann Martin (Gary); 12 great-grandsons, Brandon Butcher (Tenille), Brett Butcher, Spencer Butcher, Lorin Pace, Nelson Pace, Colton Pace, Connor Martin, Bowen Martin, Erik Butcher, Nicholas Butcher, Jake Butcher, Kaedyn Colton; seven great-granddaughters, Tara Butcher, Valery Jackson (Dustinn), Katie Pace, Genny Pace, Lindy Pace, Polly Pace, Elissa Martin; one great-great-grandson, Carson Duane Butcher, four step-great-grandchildren, and one step great-great-grandson. Frank was a faithful member of the LDS church, holding many callings and leadership positions. He will be missed by his many friends and neighbors in the Grandview 2nd Ward where he lived for over 45 years. The family would like to thank all the caregivers at Highland Cove and Garden Terrace Hospice who gave such tender service to him his last few weeks. Funeral services will be held on Sat., March 3, at 11 a.m. at the Grandview Ward building at 2930 South 2000 East in Salt Lake City, Utah. Viewing will be from 10 -11 a.m. Interment at Wasatch Lawn Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.larkinmortuary.com.
