In the 1850 census for Frankfort, Belinda was shown as "Malinda" but in the future censuses, she was called Belinda. But when she died, her name was shown again as Melinda.
Belinda, with Sylvanus, was the mother of five sons and a daughter. Four of her sons joined the Union when the Civil War began and three came home but sadly her son Reuben, newly married to Susan Abbott in 1862, died the next year in Louisiana. I was told his body was eventually sent home and he's buried in the "Sylvanus Bayard" family plot.
Sylvanus and Belinda were still living in Winterport in the 1880 census but in five more years, Sylvanus would be gone.
In the 1900 when the census was taken in Hampden, Penobscot, Maine, Belinda was living with her son, James and his wife, Mary Ann Grant who had been born in Scotland.
Belinda would live another five years and when she died in Milford, New Hampshire, the death record showed her name as "Melinda Bayard" the widow of Sylvanus Bayard. Her remains were laid to rest in the Oak Hill Cemetery, next to her husband.
